These beautiful maps are true works of art, painstakingly created, starting with an ultra high-definition photograph of a high-quality original antique/vintage map, color-corrected and reprinted. The printed map is then HAND LAID onto a cloth ‘backing’… just as maps and nautical charts were made for centuries. It is this authentic ‘look and feel’ which our customers find so irresistible.
Our maps are produced by hand, one-by-one, using a process perfected over time. The quality of our finished products is exceptional. As you might expect, the making process takes time and of course the larger the map the more difficult the process. For this reason, some maps can take as much as 7 days to prepare. Each finished map is signed and dated individually by the maker, adding value to an already outstanding product that should increase over time.
All our maps originate from our collection of genuine antique and vintage maps. Our standard ‘nominal’ sizes are based upon European standard paper sizes as follows:
A0: 841 x 1189 mm, approx. 33 x 47 in
A1: 594 x 841 mm, approx. 24 x 33 in
A2: 420 x 594 mm, approx. 17 x 24 in
A3: 297 x 420 mm, approx. 12 x 17 in
Because old maps were produced on a wide range of different types and sizes of printing media, e.g. vellum/parchment and various grades of handmade and later machine-made paper, our A-sizes above are ‘nominal’. The long dimension of each size may vary depending upon the proportions of the original map.
In addition, a protective laminate can be applied that completely protects the surface of the map. It is almost completely invisible and is a good option as opposed to using glass if you wish to frame your map, because it is reflection free and adds almost no weight.
Maps take from 5-7 days to make and are shipped directly to the purchaser from Ireland. The cost of shipping is included to locations within the continental United States via An Post (the Irish postal service) using Registered Post, which provides tracking. The carrier quotes delivery times from 3 to 7 working days, however delivery at times can be longer. Expedited shipping is also available for an additional cost.
